Established in the early nineties, our Computer Program has been running continuously for more than ten years! Over the years, we have upgraded both the computers and the course content many times. We run three classes each year.

Each class runs over 12 weeks, and the classroom accommodates three students at a time. Our instructor Ruth is assisted by some very capable volunteers and will assist you in learning at your own pace.

We also have a Community Access Station which allows you to use a computer if you do not have one at home.

Meeting the Needs of Computer Students

Our Computer Program is student-centred. Personal success is the foundation of our day-to-day activities. For people with disabilities, having good computer skills can open doors previously closed and help to overcome barriers to independence.

We believe the most productive way to learn is in a positive, friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Our small classes allow for the individual learning needs of each student to be met. We encourage individuals with little or no computer skill, or those who have certain fears associated with computers to come forward and apply.

Most students overcome their fears in our classroom and have become well skilled in the basics of working with computers. In our classes, students are taught the basics of word processing and graphics through the use of materials that are interesting, colourful, and fun. In addition, they can learn how to create greeting cards, business cards, brochures, etc.

Students join our classes with a variety of goals. We make every attempt to ensure that each student's goals are reached.

The Computer Program is available at no cost to all members of the Nanaimo & Region Disability Resource Centre (How to become a member) with a disability and a keen interest in learning how to use a computer. Simply drop by and ask for an application form!
